The two Potsdamer Platz cinemas, which closed on 13th March to prevent the spread of Covid-19 virus, cannot yet reopen. Since the closure, our virtual cinema, arsenal 3, has been showing mainly works from our collection, which is housed at the silent green Kulturquartier. The Forum Expanded exhibition, “Part of the Problem”, in the Betonhalle at silent green also had to close prematurely on March 13th. We are now making the most of the gradual reopening of the MARS restaurant to make the medium of film physically available again, in conjunction with silent green and outside our own four walls. From 30th May, between 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. on Thursdays to Sundays, changing installation works from various Forum Expanded programs will be on display in the Betonhalle of silent green. The selection of works was inspired by “2026”, a 2010 work by the artist Maha Maamoun, which will also be screened at the Betonhalle for four months, first as a projection and then on a monitor.

2026 is based on a text from a recent Egyptian novel entitled “The Revolution of 2053” by Mahmoud Uthman and it also references a scene from Chris Marker’s “La Jetée” (1962). A time-traveler recounts his vision of the future of the Pyramids in Egypt in 2026. It is a vision that strains to reach beyond the present and yet remains constrained by it.

From June 4th onwards, another work will be presented every 14 days. We will begin with Ayoung Kim’s 2019 POROSITY VALLEY 2: TRICKSTERS’ PLOT from this year’s Forum Expanded program. Petra Genetrix, a fictional being made from a cluster of minerals or data, awakes and finds itself on the coast of the island Crypto Valley. As Petra’s migration status is examined, it comes into contact with officials that compare migrants to aliens or viruses. It doesn’t pass the test and is interned in the Smart Grid, a detention center for non-residents. After a visual and auditory hallucination, it is able to escape and follows a luring voice to the heart of the island where it meets an ancient “cloud” in the caves. Mother Rock is a transcendent presence who has existed here for eons.

Collecting for All is an exhibition of works by everyone. The museum collection is a public asset that’s protected by the museum and conserved in the museum storage most of the time, but it should actually be something that’s accessed and enjoyed by the public more often. This exhibition has been organized to provide a friendly everyday environment through which to take closer steps to the museum collection that reflects our very own lives.
Amongst 5,173 works in the SeMA collection, 86 works that cast a realistic reflection on our society and environment were selected, along with 45 works of the artists from the collection that deepen the meaning of the project, making up a total of 131 works presented in the exhibition.

The new decade begins at a time which has produced a great deal of speechlessness and thus a need for ever clearer words to be found. How does such a present change the curatorial gaze? What is the role of cinema and art? 39 installations and films are dedicated to such themes as migration, racism, sexism, state violence, capitalism, colonialism, extractivism, the climate crisis, fears of the future, the loss of history and more. But above all, they refer to themselves as being part of the wider structure from which they emerged.

Migration: Speaking Nearby
Group Show

23 Nov 2019 – 23 Feb 2020
Asia Culture Center, Gwangju, Korea

《Migration: Speaking Nearby》, an exhibition organized in collaboration by the Asia Culture Center/Asia Culture Institute and the Goethe-Institut Korea, marks the final journey in the “Migration Narratives in East and Southeast Asia” project, sharing the outcomes of an effort launched as an initiative by the Goethe-Institut and continued from 2018.

Staged as part of “ACC PRISM,” an annual exhibition project since ACC’s opening with a focus on exchange and cooperation with various culture and arts institutions in Korea and overseas, the exhibition is significant as an attempt to approach Asian history, society, and culture from a new perspective through the general theme of “migration,” which has emerged as a significant contemporary global issue. 《Migration: Speaking Nearby》 project and exhibition was designed and developed in conjunction with nine curators active in nine different Asian cities (Seoul, Gwangju, Beijing, Hong Kong, Ulaanbaatar, Taipei, Singapore, Bangkok, and Jakarta), as well as 21 artists/artist groups invited by them and various other collaborators. Individual projects proposed by each of them were developed in an open and multilayered process of interaction and relationship-forming through seminars and workshops in Korea and Germany and small-scale exhibitions, group exhibitions, and discussions in Beijing, Ulaanbaatar, and Hong Kong. Sharing the various new works created through individual projects along with existing works by some of the participating artists and artist groups, the exhibition suggests different perspectives and approaches to the multilayered and complex aspects and circumstances of migration, with a focus on East and Southeast Asia.
