Ayoung Kims erste Einzelausstellung in einem deutschen Museum umfasst die letzten Jahre ihrer künstlerischen Praxis. Mithilfe von Künstlicher Intelligenz, Virtual Reality, Video, Spielsimulationen, Skulpturen und Klangfunktionen erschafft Kim umfassende fiktive Universen mit eigenen zeitlichen und räumlichen Gesetzen. Ihre Arbeiten sind oft durch spekulative Erzählungen miteinander verbunden, die dennoch mit der realen Welt, in der wir leben, in Verbindung stehen. Die Betrachtenden selbst werden zu Mitspielenden, die die Erzählung aus ihrer Perspektive beeinflussen können. Kims Protagonist*innen sind Menschen, mythologische Wesen und virtuelle Entitäten, die die Grenzen zwischen verschiedenen möglichen Realitäten überschreiten und mögliche und unmögliche Welten über verschiedene Zeiten und Räume hinweg aufeinander treffen lassen. Die Ausstellung im Hamburger Bahnhof ermöglicht es dem Publikum nicht nur, in Kims virtuelle Landschaften einzutauchen, sondern überträgt diese in den Museumsraum, wo sich die Besuchenden immer wieder verlieren und neu begegnen können. Dies ist die zehnte Ausgabe einer Reihe von Begleitpublikationen zu Einzelausstellungen zeitgenössischer Künstler*innen im Hamburger Bahnhof – Nationalgalerie der Gegenwart. Sie enthält eine kuratorische Einführung von Charlotte Knaup, ein Interview mit Ayoung Kim von Sam Bardaouil sowie zwei Webtoons der Künstlerinnen 1172 und cosmos.

 
Ayoung Kim’s first solo exhibition in a German museum spans over the most recent years of her artistic practice. Using artificial intelligence, virtual reality, video, game simulations, sculpture and sonic fiction, Kim creates expansive fictional universes with their own temporal and spatial laws. Her works are often linked together by speculative narratives that are still connected to the actual world that we live in. The viewers themselves are transformed into first person players, controlling the narrative from their own point of view. Her subjects are humans, mythological beings and virtual entities who cross the boundaries between different possible realities, making possible and impossible worlds collide across different times and spaces. The exhibition at Hamburger Bahnhof does not only enable its audiences to enter Kim’s virtual landscapes but extends those into the museum space where visitors can lose and reencounter themselves over and over again.
This is the tenth in a series of publications accompanying solo exhibitions of contemporary artists at Hamburger Bahnhof – Nationalgalerie der Gegenwart. It comprises a curatorial introduction by Charlotte Knaup, an interview with Ayoung Kim by Sam Bardaouil, as well as two webtoons by the artists 1172 and cosmos.

김아영의 독일 미술관 첫 개인전은 그의 최근 몇 년간의 작업을 폭넓게 아우른다. 인공지능, 가상현실, 비디오, 게임 시뮬레이션, 조각, 사운드 픽션 등을 활용해 작가는 고유한 시간적·공간적 법칙을 지닌 광대한 허구적 세계들을 창조한다. 그의 작업들은 실제 세계와 연결된 사변적인 서사를 통해 서로 연결되며, 관객 자신도 일인칭 플레이어로 변해 각자의 관점에서 이야기를 이끌게 된다. 그의 작업 주체들은 인간, 신화적 존재, 가상적 존재들로 구성되며, 이들은 서로 다른 현실 사이의 경계를 넘나들며 가능한 세계와 불가능한 세계가 시간과 공간을 횡단하며 충돌하도록 만든다. 함부르거 반호프에서의 이번 전시는 관객들이 작가의 가상 풍경 속으로 들어가는 데 그치지 않고, 그 풍경을 미술관 공간으로 확장하여 방문객들이 무수히 자신을 잃고 다시 마주할 수 있는 경험을 제공한다.
본 도록은 함부르거 반호프, 독일국립현대미술관이 진행하는 동시대 작가 개인전 출판물 시리즈의 열 번째 책이다. 샬롯 크나우프의 전시 서문, 삼 바르다윌이 진행한 김아영 인터뷰, 그리고 웹툰작가 1172와 cosmos의 웹툰 두 편으로 구성되어 있다.
