The two Potsdamer Platz cinemas, which closed on 13th March to prevent the spread of Covid-19 virus, cannot yet reopen. Since the closure, our virtual cinema, arsenal 3, has been showing mainly works from our collection, which is housed at the silent green Kulturquartier. The Forum Expanded exhibition, “Part of the Problem”, in the Betonhalle at silent green also had to close prematurely on March 13th. We are now making the most of the gradual reopening of the MARS restaurant to make the medium of film physically available again, in conjunction with silent green and outside our own four walls. From 30th May, between 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. on Thursdays to Sundays, changing installation works from various Forum Expanded programs will be on display in the Betonhalle of silent green. The selection of works was inspired by “2026”, a 2010 work by the artist Maha Maamoun, which will also be screened at the Betonhalle for four months, first as a projection and then on a monitor.

2026 is based on a text from a recent Egyptian novel entitled “The Revolution of 2053” by Mahmoud Uthman and it also references a scene from Chris Marker’s “La Jetée” (1962). A time-traveler recounts his vision of the future of the Pyramids in Egypt in 2026. It is a vision that strains to reach beyond the present and yet remains constrained by it.

From June 4th onwards, another work will be presented every 14 days. We will begin with Ayoung Kim’s 2019 POROSITY VALLEY 2: TRICKSTERS’ PLOT from this year’s Forum Expanded program. Petra Genetrix, a fictional being made from a cluster of minerals or data, awakes and finds itself on the coast of the island Crypto Valley. As Petra’s migration status is examined, it comes into contact with officials that compare migrants to aliens or viruses. It doesn’t pass the test and is interned in the Smart Grid, a detention center for non-residents. After a visual and auditory hallucination, it is able to escape and follows a luring voice to the heart of the island where it meets an ancient “cloud” in the caves. Mother Rock is a transcendent presence who has existed here for eons.
