Ghost Dancers A

Produced for the solo exhibition “Syntax and Sorcery” (2022) at Gallery Hyundai, Ghost Dancers A represents Ernst Mo and En Storm, two protagonists of a narrative that served as the backbone of the exhibition. Two empty helmets that look like decapitated heads are hung from the ceiling with metal chains, installed facing each other–more like staring at each other, helplessly but unable to let go even when in the face of death. The helmet is hollow where the face should be, and instead, the screens of a tablet PC plays two beings sprinting on a motorcycle. It is the game-engine-configured videos of Ernst Mo and En Storm riding through the streets and alleys of an eerie city. While their bikes sprint back and forth at extraordinary speeds in a breathtaking and ecstatic race, you can also see corrugated tubes and wires reminiscent of spinal cords or intestines hanging from the neck of a dangling helmet to the floor.

갤러리 현대에서의 개인전《문법과 마법》(2022)을 위해 제작되었고, 전시의 배경이 되는 세계관 속 두 주인공 에른스트 모와 엔 스톰을 시사한다. 참수된 머리처럼, 천장으로부터 드리워진 메탈 체인에 매달린 두 개의 헬멧은 죽음 앞에서 무력해진 상태에서조차 서로를 놓지 못하듯 대치하고 있다. 텅 빈 헬멧의 내부, 얼굴 대신 자리잡은 타블렛 화면은 질주하는 두 존재의 모습의 영상을 반복해 보여준다. 게임엔진으로 구현된 을씨년스러운 도시의 거리와 골목을 미친 속도로 경쟁하며 질주하는 “고스트 댄서”, 에른스트 모와 엔 스톰의 바이크 레이스 영상이다. 두 존재를 태운 바이크가 현기증 나는 레이스를 펼치는 와중, 매달린 헬멧의 목 부위에는 척수나 내장을 연상시키는 주름관 튜브와 전선들이 바닥까지 늘어져 내려와 있다.
